I never thought I'd be the person writing a swimming blog post. Growing up, I was more of a "dip my toes and call it good" kind of swimmer. But here I am, three years into my adult swimming journey, and I couldn't be more excited to share what I've learned with you all.

Last month, I even braved my first November outdoor swim (yes, you read that right!). While the initial shock of cold water had me questioning my sanity, the rush of adrenaline and peaceful solitude made it all worthwhile. More on that adventure in my recent post about why swimming has become such a game-changer for me.

If you're thinking about taking the plunge into swimming as an adult, first of all - kudos to you! It's never too late to start. Second, let me share the essential gear that's made my journey from nervous newbie to confident swimmer so much smoother.

Find these must-have items for learning to swim as an adult:

1. A High-Quality Swimsuit

This isn't the time for that cute bikini or your low cut tankini top from your beach vacation. Trust me, I learned this the hard way! Look for a suit that's chlorine-resistant and fits snugly without restricting movement. After trying countless options, I've found that athletic one-pieces and high neck tankinis are perfect for lap swimming.

2. Reliable Goggles

Nothing ruins a swim faster than leaky goggles. I spent weeks squinting through chlorinated water before investing in a proper pair. The game-changer? Getting ones with adjustable nose bridges. If you're planning on outdoor swimming like me, grab a pair with UV protection - your eyes will thank you later. Also, consider tinted goggles if you'll be out swimming in the bright sun. I love the pair I have!

3. Swim Cap

I resisted the swim cap for months because, let's be honest, they're not the most flattering accessory. But after getting tired of spending 20 minutes detangling chlorine-soaked hair, I gave in. Pro tip: silicone caps are gentler on your hair than latex ones. You can also find swim caps made specifically for long hair.

4. Microfiber Towel

Regular cotton towels are bulky and take forever to dry. I switched to a microfiber towel last year, and it's been a total game-changer. They're super absorbent, dry quickly, and don't take up half your gym bag. Pro tip: Consider bringing two towels: one for drying off after swimming and one for your shower!

5. Kickboard

My trusty kickboard has become my best friend during training sessions. It's perfect for focusing on leg strength and technique, plus it gives your arms a much-needed break during longer sessions.

6. Pool Bag

After a few mishaps with a soggy old gym bag, I invested in a proper pool bag, complete with mesh pockets and a waterproof compartment—total game-changer. Now, wet swimsuits can breathe, and my phone and wallet stay dry. Pro tip: find one with a side pocket for easy access to your water bottle!

7. Swim Fins

Don't let these intimidate you! They're not just for professional swimmers. I use mine during training to build leg strength and work on my ankle flexibility. Plus, they make you feel like a superhero gliding through the water. Pro tip: Also, think about getting a mesh swim bag to carry your swim gear in.

8. Water Bottle

Swimming is deceivingly dehydrating. I learned this after a few post-swim headaches. Now I always keep my water bottle at the end of my lane. Yes, you need to drink water even when you're surrounded by it!

9. Waterproof Fitness Watch

While not essential, tracking my progress has been incredibly motivating. Seeing my lap times improve and knowing my heart rate during different strokes helps me train smarter. I love my Apple Watch and the plastic band that this watch comes with is perfect for swimming!

10. Swim Parka

This was my latest addition after starting outdoor swimming, and wow - what a difference! It's like a wearable changing room and warm hug combined. The fleece lining is perfect for those chilly pool-deck moments, and the hood keeps my wet hair from dripping everywhere.

The Real Essential: Just Start

While all these items have made my swimming journey more comfortable, the most important thing is simply getting in the water. Start with the basics (suit, goggles, and cap), and add other items as you discover what works for you.

Remember, every swimmer you see at the pool started somewhere. Even the ones gracefully gliding through the water probably had moments of swallowing pool water and forgetting to breathe (guilty as charged!).

I'd love to hear about your swimming journey in the comments below. Are you just starting out? What essentials have you found helpful? And hey, if you're curious about my outdoor swimming adventures or general tips for adult swimmers, check out my other posts on the blog.

Happy swimming! 🏊‍♀️
